Looking for value in a Bear Market

Image result for its a wonderful life

George Bailey kept his head during the 1928 stock market crash when many investors chose to make a run on the bank or in his case the Bailey Building and Loan which by comparison to today's world would be a credit union.  Although we have had a choppy ride and the market is well under performance for the year down from the totals I posted in another article. This is the time to buy not sell those companies that have a strong upward potential like Apple or Nividia think of them as being on sale and a chance for you to have the opportunity to benefit from their eventual upward momentum.

Let everyone else panic; do not sell off your 401K or your EFT's or even your blue chip stocks (explained in earlier articles) at this time.  Warren Buffet included this poem by Rudyard Kipling in his 2017 Berkshire Hathaway letter to his shareholders and I can't think of anything that sums up what I am saying better than his statement:

If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs ...
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting ...
If you can think – and not make thoughts your aim ...
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you ...
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it. ~ Rudyard Kipling

The overall market is responding to the possibility of a interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve.  It is my estimation with the overall market they will refrain from a further hike that would stunt the growth of the United States economy and possibly bring on a recession as a result of lower GNP.

There is also a lot riding on a trade deal between China and the US after the 90 tariff cease fire expires.  China's President Xi Jinping expressed in a speech this morning stating that China was going to remain on it's current path emphasizing it's right to seek it's own destiny.  This speech was on the anniversary of China's 40 year policy of "reform and opening up"  the President stated:

"The past 40 years eloquently prove that the path, theory, system and the culture of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics ... are completely correct, and that CPC theory line and policy that have since taken shape are completely correct."

Berkshire Hathaway lost over 50% of it's value during the 2008 stock market crash but 10 years later has recovered and prospered because Warren Buffet kept his head during that downturn and reinvesting in companies that issued dividends and compounded interest  that made the downturn irrelevant with our mock portfolio we are going to continue to do the same.  We re selling nothing but holding on for the long term potential of the investment choices we have previously made.

The 2018 Santa Claus rally that was expected due to the midterm election looks as if this year it will only be a Ghost of Christmas Past.

Just Another Boring Bank Stock? ~ Not Oregon Bancorp

I just happened too be browsing around looking for something; I can't remember what when I saw this little gem of  stock Oregon Bancorp (ORBN) now as we speak for $33.00 a share.  So I want to add it to our mock portfolio. It has so many things going for it which makes it a perfect little add.  First off it is a banking stock which we don't have.  Yes there is T.Rowe Price which is more of a brokerage financial institution, while Oregon Bancorp is a bank.  Selling at $33.00 a share it is easily affordable for you, me and the average investor to buy.  Oregon Bancorp is listed on the Over the Counter Pink Sheets.  In the old days on the New York stock exchange these shares did not sell all that often and were listed on actual pink sheets of paper that's why they are still called "Pink Sheets"    Oregon Bancorp just had a blowout quarter with their financials it seems the company is really doing things right.  I looked over several charts by them first looking at
